How 4G Mobile Broadband would change the Mobile Phone Market in UK

How 4G Mobile Broadband would change the  Mobile Phone Market in UK

Thanks to EE, half of the UK population now has 4G mobile broadband

4G mobile broadband has now extended to 50 cities and towns which would cover over half of the UK population.

EE, the mobile phone company to provide faster 4G mobile broadband in UK , has announced that the service launched five months ago and would now reach Reading, Bradford, Bingley, Doncaster, Dudley, Harpenden, Leicester, Lichfield, Loughborough, Luton, Shipley, St Albans and West Bromwich in addition to the 37 towns and cities already covered.

The company, formerly known as Everything Everywhere, has been focusing its efforts on rolling out what 4G services it can before rivals gain access to spectrum bought in the recent auction and launch products in the summer.

How faster 4G mobile broadband would work in UK

EE is using its existing 1800Mhz spectrum, repurposed for 4G, rather than using any spectrum bought under the new spectrum auction. It would  charges from about £14.99 per month.
Chief executive of EE, Olaf Swantree said we are remaining ahead of our schedule to equip UK consumers and businesses with 4G,"

He also add that “our customers are at the heart of our rollout and we are working hard to deliver 4G to 70 per cent of the UK population by the end of this year, and 98 per cent of the population by the end of 2014.”

EE has also announced that 4G was being rolled out to one of the most rural areas of Britain. The company said that it would make 4G available across much of the Northern Fells, delivering speeds of up to 12Mbps over 100 square miles in area that claims the UK’s highest concentration of home workers.

More than 2,000 residents will get high-speed broadband with headline speeds claiming up to 20 Mbps. This would come as a very positive news to the rural areas in UK

BT is current finalizing its trials in rural Cornwall, funded in part by European money, to experiment with the best ways of deploying wireless and fixed broadband in very remote countryside.

EE, which has been trialing the Cumbrian service since last year, said it will evaluate usage and behavior and could develop other plans specific to rural customers.

TU Go app by O2 UK allows mobile phone users to call, text and access voicemail via the internet

TU Go app by O2 is free to download for its contract customers, allows mobile phone users to call, text and access voicemail via the internet on any compatible device, using their existing telephone number

O2 has this week launched its TU Go VoIP application, which will allow UK mobile phone users to make and receive calls, texts and voicemail over the internet using their existing telephone number.

The service, available on all Apple and Android devices, is free to download for O2 contract customers, with the calls and texts taken from their existing bundle.

Customers using TU Go will be able to make and receive calls and texts from anyone on any network, even if the recipient doesn’t have the app installed. O2 will deliver calls, texts and voicemail as normal so contacts won’t notice anything different.

O2 UK’s  marketing and consumer director Sally Cowdry said: “For the first time, TU Go will mean customers can use their O2 number across a huge range of different devices. It will extend the O2 phone number and package far beyond just the mobile handset.

“TU Go is a statement of intent from O2 to other UK service providers: that we will continue to develop services that meet the existing demands of our customers and will go beyond those creating new products that open their eyes to the possibilities that mobile technology can deliver.”

Affirm enters the UK fast-growing mobile payments business and mobile commerce.

Affirm  enters the  UK fast-growing mobile payments business and mobile commerce.

PayPal Co founder launches rival business called Affirm that lets you pay with two taps on a smart mobile phone.

Affirm UK  which is owned by Max Levchin, co-founder of the online payment giant plans to compete in the crowded and UK fast-growing mobile payments business.

Affirm UK's technology will help the mobile phone UK  shoppers complete online purchases more quickly and easily when they are using smartphones , tablets and other devices.

eBay is now the owner of PayPal, which is one of the leaders in online payments, however, the company is being challenged by a host of start-ups, including, o2, Barclay, Square etc. that all focus on new opportunities and problems created by the boom in mobile phone commerce.

Affirm UK is focusing on streamlining the mobile checkout process online, which currently involves typing in lots of information, like address, card numbers etc. using a small type pad.

Affirm also said it has whittled the online buying process down to two taps on a smart phone screen - one to tap the Affirm button on participating merchant websites and a second to confirm the order.

Affirm is using Facebook to confirm users' identities, so for first-time users the process includes a third step which involves logging into their Facebook accounts and accepting the Affirm application.

Mr Levchin co-founded PayPal with Peter Thiel and was its chief technology officer for four years, before it was acquired by eBay. He designed and built PayPal's pioneering online security and fraud-prevention systems.

Affirm said it plans to gives UK users 30 days to pay for their purchases, comparing the service to a charge card. It makes money by charging participating merchants a small fee.

However, if users do not pay their balance, Affirm can charge "reasonable" fees on delinquent accounts, according to the company's terms of service.

Affirm users can pay off their balances using credit cards, bank transfers or physical checks. PayPal was not included as a method of payment in its terms of service.

Last week PayPal UK announced the  launched a new chip and pin machine to offer small traders such as ice cream sellers, market stall holders and taxi drivers a way to accept card payments.
